Storage Hot Water Systems

Storage hot water systems are the older style of hot water units. They are designed to hold water in a tank where cold water is heated and stored before being sent through the hot water outlets into your home.

Storage systems work by the laws of physics. As cold water is heavier than hot water, it enters at the base of the tank where it is then heated by either an electric element or a gas burner. The lighter, hot water then rises and exits from the top of the tank. As long as the tank is heating the cold water at a quicker rate than the hot water leaving the tank, you will always have a steady supply of hot water.

Storage hot water systems utilise a thermostat to regulate the temperature of the water in the tank. The thermostat will turn the burner or element on or off as required.

In comparison to other types of hot water systems, storage units are generally cheaper to purchase. Although, they can be more expensive to run as water is heated and kept hot, regardless of whether it’s used.

Standard household storage units range from capacities of 25L to 170L with other sizes available upon request.

It is essential to choose the right size tank to match your hot water usage. As a tank too small will leave you without hot water when you need it. You may also end up paying extra in running costs if you’re using energy to continuously heat water that isn’t being used.
